The incredible growth of megacities


- Around 77 million people are moving from rural to urban areas each year.
- The number of megacities (cities with more than 10 million people) has more than doubled over the past two decades, from 14 (1995) to 37 (2016).

From 1995 to 2015, Asia’s urban population increased by an average of 2.78% each year. The circle below contains 22 of the world's 37 megacities, which each hold at least 10 million people.
